Learning to Fall

So, I went skiing for the first time this past weekend. My aunt, uncle, and cousin took me to Monarch. What a gorgeous mountain! It snowed the whole time we were there, but I understand that on a clear day the view from the top is even more spectacular. I would say that my biggest accomplishment was not falling once either getting on or off the lift. That much I can do. It took a while to get the hang of turning and stopping. I did better if I made wide sweeping turns. Turns that were too sharp or not sharp enough usually led in a wipe out of some kind. I would say that could be a metaphor for real life.

What is funny to me is that in college we came up with personal images of consolation and desolation. At the time my image of consolation was white water rafting, as opposed to my image of desolation, a downhill skiier totally wiping out. One involves letting the water take the raft, navigating with a group of friends. The other pushing off down a stationary hill working the whole time not to lose control.

The day was a lot of fun. I'd definitely want more practice before I could change my images, but I would go again.

  1. What a great time you seemed to have had, Sarah! I need some time to dwell on your images and what they mean to you.... That "Letting the water take the raft..." has lots of possibilities, but I'm not sure where I will be going with it!!! I don't think it's always up to us to determine that.... Have a great week and prayer day!

  2. Wow, sounds awesome and scary at the same time. I was only on skis once and didn't last long. Sounds like you're already ahead of me on that score. Glad you had a better experience.
    Peace,

  3. Hi Sarah,

I gave up downhill skiing because I wasn't crazy about speed. I love the pictures you've posted. Colorado is such a beautiful state. The mountains just speak loudly of the grandeur of God.

  4. Dear Sarah,
I'm so glad you got to go skiing. The pictures are great. I do LOVE those mountains!! I hope you get another chance to go before you leave Denver.
We're expecting 520 (!) for the Jubilee celebration tomorrow. Of course the house is full.
Enjoy every minute of your time there. Love and prayers, Paula

  5. Sarah! I finally have the internet at home so I have the time and leisure to check out the blog.
While I didn't get to ski this week (I prefer cross country skiing to downhill - more control...hmmm) I did go ice skating. I had a great time even with the falling and trying to avoid the little ones on the ice.

Hope all is well with you,
